The year was 2007. I was still a big Yfm listener and tuned into most of the shows - my favourite show at the time being The Midnight Fix with Tholi B. One song that received a considerable amount of spins on the station was a track titled “Chillaz” by the iconic Motswako trio Morafe. I would completely lose it every time it came on. The blatantly boom-bap production – done by the legendary Ishmael Morabe, who also featured on the song and would go on to produce Khuli Chana’s “Jiva's Fabulous” from his classic debut album “The MotswakOriginator” (2009) – is what initially drew me to the song. That and the explosive opening verse from Towdee Mac.
What frustrated me the most about the song was that I seemed to be the only one in my circle of friends who knew about it, which was wild because I remember the joint spending several weeks on the number 1 spot on one of the Yfm chart shows. At one point I felt like the universe was playing a prank on me and the song only existed in my head. What legitimized my theory was the fact that I searched everywhere for the album it was available on (“A Ene: The Revelation”, 2007) at every music shop I knew of at the time and never found it. I eventually gave up and never heard the song again. That is, until a few months ago. After over a decade of not hearing the joint, I randomly searched for the album on Apple Music and found it. My head exploded all over again. If you’ve never heard this absolute banger of a joint, do yourself a favour and check it out right here. In the words of Cassper Nyovest: "Ke Hip-Hoppo, dogg!"
